A <em>collection of articles about one main topic.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The knowledge base forms a separate part of your blog, for example in your menu, your side bar, or at the bottom of your footer.<\/p>\n<p>Over the past summer, I wrote about fifty articles myself to build up a knowledge base.<\/p>\n<p>It is a knowledge base about Website tools.<\/p>\n<p>Usually these are articles that are easy and quick to write. They are short, factual articles in which you explain something or describe what it is.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, that is quite a job, but you will benefit from it for years. Now already after a month, I see the amount of visitors increase.<\/p>\n<h2>Why create a knowledge base for your website?<\/h2>\n<p>Lots of people are looking for basic information about a certain topic. Google is completely focused on that, to give people information that will help them towards reaching their goal.<\/p>\n<p>When you create a knowledge base, you can also refer your own readers to it. You don\u2019t have to explain what something means all the time, but you can simply link to it.<\/p>\n<p>How do you build a knowledge base and what comes into account? I will give a step by step explanation to build a great knowledge base for your website.<\/p>\n<h2>1. Choose a knowledge base on which not much has been written about<\/h2>\n<p>If there are already three knowledge bases about \u2018Internet Marketing\u2019, it is better to go with another main topic.<\/p>\n<p>WPjournalist is also a blog about WordPress and internet marketing, so I started looking for another angle.<\/p>\n<p>The idea of creating a knowledge base about \u2018Website tools\u2019 came to mind quite fast.<\/p>\n<p>From Google Analytics to Buffer; these are tools to make your website perform better.<\/p>\n<p>It is also something I write about a lot on WPjournalist: How to get more out of your WordPress website. By using these website tools!<\/p>\n<p><strong>TIP:<\/strong> The main topic connects well to my website.<\/p>\n<h2>2. Choose a topic which is sought after a lot<\/h2>\n<p>You can go with a nice main topic, but if there is no demand, then it is quite pointless.<\/p>\n<p>I notice that there is a lot of need for free tools to improve your website.<\/p>\n<p>Besides that, I only wanted to describe tools that are (partly) free in my knowledge base.<\/p>\n<p>That also gives added value to my visitors, as they usually have a limited budget to improve their website.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A knowledge base can be made for every branch.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If you repair piano\u2019s, you can make a knowledge base about anything that has to do with piano\u2019s.<\/li>\n<li>If you teach yin yoga, you can tell all about this in your knowledge base. The terms that you are using, the developments, the kinds of movements etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>3. Split the topic into categories<\/h2>\n<p>Once you have decided about which topic you are going to write, you make a list with the sub-topics you can write about.<\/p>\n<p>I first wrote down about thirty website tools which I used myself: The google search string planner, the design program Canva; useful tools which I used a lot.<\/p>\n<p>After I had about thirty, I could categorize them:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Tools about building a website<\/li>\n<li>Tools about design<\/li>\n<li>Tools about\u202fSEO<\/li>\n<li>Etc<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>After a while, I had thought of 11 categories:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-22466 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/wpjournalist.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/kennisbank-categorie\u00ebn.jpg\" alt=\"knowlegdebase categories\" width=\"313\" height=\"360\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 313px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 313\/360;\"><\/p>\n<p>You can always add new categories later and expand it.<\/p>\n<p>The good thing about WordPress is the fact that is also works with categories. I made a page with \u2018Website Tools\u2019 and put it in the navigation bar.<\/p>\n<p>After that, you can make categories, such as \u2018Website creating\u2019, \u2018design\u2019, \u2018email marketing\u2019 etc.<\/p>\n<p>Under each category you can then write a couple of articles.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-22468 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/wpjournalist.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/subcategorie-kennisbank-1.jpg\" alt=\"subcategory-knowledgebase-1\" width=\"800\" height=\"422\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 800px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 800\/422;\"><\/p>\n<p>And that\u2019s how your knowledge base gets a thorough structure, in which readers can retrieve the different (sub)topics quickly.<\/p>\n<p>On WPjournalist, I also presented the knowledge base as a separate part of the website. You can find the knowledge base in the navigation bar, the sidebar and in the footer.<\/p>\n<p>You can put the following code into your footer\/sidebar:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; background-color: #ccffff;\">&lt;a href=&#8221;https:\/\/wpjournalist.nl\/category\/website-tools\/website-bouwen\/&#8221;&gt;Website bouwen&lt;\/A&gt;&lt;br&gt;<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000; background-color: #ccffff;\"> &lt;a href=&#8221;https:\/\/wpjournalist.nl\/category\/website-tools\/social-media\/&#8221;&gt;Social media&lt;\/A&gt;&lt;br&gt;<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000; background-color: #ccffff;\"> &lt;a href=&#8221;https:\/\/wpjournalist.nl\/category\/website-tools\/content-marketing\/&#8221;&gt;Content marketing&lt;\/A&gt;&lt;br&gt;<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000; background-color: #ccffff;\"> &lt;a href=&#8221;https:\/\/wpjournalist.nl\/category\/website-tools\/seo\/&#8221;&gt;SEO&lt;\/A&gt;&lt;br&gt;<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000; background-color: #ccffff;\"> &lt;a href=&#8221;https:\/\/wpjournalist.nl\/category\/website-tools\/beeld-fotografie\/&#8221;&gt;Beeld &amp; fotografie&lt;\/A&gt;&lt;br&gt;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; background-color: #ccffff;\">etc.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Obviously, you do need to change the URLs into your own website domain.<\/p>\n<h2>4. Reserve a couple of months to write<\/h2>\n<p>It is quite a task to write all the articles for you knowledge base. Each article needs to have some body and I use a minimum of 300 words per article.<\/p>\n<p>This is also what the Yoast SEO plugin advises; at least 300 words.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t write forty articles in three days; it will put you off and it\u2019s not good for the quality of the articles to write so many at once.<\/p>\n<p>It is better to write one or two articles a day.<\/p>\n<p>Within two months you will already have built a large knowledge base with about 50 articles.<\/p>\n<p>50 x 300 words is about 15.000 words. That is quite an eBook\u2026<\/p>\n<h2>5. Ensure good article optimization<\/h2>\n<p>Of course, the most important thing is that you write good content for your readers.<\/p>\n<p>Also make sure your articles are optimized in a good manner. You have to use the right keywords for each article, ideally within the header.<\/p>\n<p>These keywords are of course the things your readers search for in Google.<\/p>\n<p>Also, within the articles in your knowledge base you need to link to other articles on your website as much as possible.<\/p>\n<p>This way, it becomes an entire network consisting of referrals and it will be seen more as a whole. Which is something Google absolutely loves.<\/p>\n<p>When you start writing your knowledge base articles, don\u2019t wait until you have finished all of them. So don\u2019t publish 40 articles on your website in one day.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s better to place one or two articles a day into your knowledge base. This way, you basically force Google to come by your website daily and index it again.<\/p>\n<h2>6. Edit your categories<\/h2>\n<p>Optimizing the categories is something many people don\u2019t do. After you\u2019ve created the categories, you can completely fill them in.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>name<\/li>\n<li>slug<\/li>\n<li>description<\/li>\n<li>etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Fill them out piece by piece, especially with the description it is important that this is done extensively. For some categories, I have made a description of about 200 words.<\/p>\n<p>Next, you can optimize the text with SEO Yoast. Because with this plugin you can also optimize categories.<\/p>\n<p>The optimizing contributes to strengthening the foundation of your knowledge base.<\/p>\n<h2>7. Pay attention to the layout<\/h2>\n<p>As said before, the knowledge base is a separate part of your website. And so it is recommended to also let this show in the layout.<\/p>\n<p>I use the tool <a href=\"https:\/\/wpjournalist.nl\/en\/canva-makes-design-easy-for-everyone\/\">Canva <\/a>to do this easily and fast.<\/p>\n<p>With WPjournalist, the highlighted image of each article has a separate colour, depending on the sub-topic.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The sub-topic SEO has a pink colour<\/li>\n<li>Content marketing has a light blue colour<\/li>\n<li><a class=\"thirstylink\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Hosting\" href=\"https:\/\/wpjournalist.nl\/en\/link\/sohosted\/\" data-shortcode=\"true\">Hosting<\/a> is\u202fbrown<\/li>\n<li>etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-22470 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/wpjournalist.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/structuur-kennisbank-vormgeving.jpg\" alt=\"structure-knowledge base-design\" width=\"800\" height=\"297\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 800px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 800\/297;\"><\/p>\n<p>Another difference: The highlighted image (above the article) is bigger compared to a regular blog.<\/p>\n<p>There are a lot of knowledge bases with text only. I decided to also use images in combination with text. It makes it more clear and pleasant.<\/p>\n<h2>8. Bonus tip: Create reviews<\/h2>\n<p>As one of the only knowledge bases, I also use reviews. With each article in my knowledge base, I have added a website tool review.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-22472 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/wpjournalist.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/review-van-online-website-tool-Typeform.jpg\" alt=\"review-online-website-tool-Typeform\" width=\"658\" height=\"413\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 658px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 658\/413;\"><\/p>\n<p>Note: not every knowledge base is suitable to give reviews. If you only give factual information, a review would not be appropriate.<\/p>\n<p>But if you choose a main topic on which you can also give judgement, I would definitely add reviews.<\/p>\n<p>Why?<\/p>\n<p>Well, reviews get a remarkable reference in Google, stars:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-22474 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/wpjournalist.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/typeform-review-1.jpg\" alt=\"typeform-review-1\" width=\"800\" height=\"398\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 800px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 800\/398;\"><\/p>\n<p>Coincidentally, I also had the option to add reviews in my theme, but of course not every theme has this option.<\/p>\n<p>In that case you can install a plugin to add reviews, like <a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/plugins\/wp-review\/\">WP-Review<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>9. Wait patiently\u2026<\/h2>\n<p>Then comes the time to wait patiently.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t expect to get a huge increase of visitors within two weeks. It takes time before the search engines have indexed your knowledge base and have estimated its value.<\/p>\n<p>With WPjournalist, it took a month before it started to benefit from this. And that is actually quite fast.<\/p>\n<p>If you write about the right topics, you have a chance to score higher in Google. I will give you a few examples:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-22476 size-full lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/wpjournalist.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/afbeeldingen-comprimeren-TinyPNG-zoekresultaat.jpg\" alt=\"pictures-comprimese-TinyPNG-searchresult\" width=\"800\" height=\"329\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 800px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 800\/329;\"><\/p>\n<p>Another example:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-22478 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/wpjournalist.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/designmantic-zoekresultaat.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"281\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 800px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 800\/281;\"><\/p>\n<p>After this, WPjournalist comes in at 4th on Google. Right behind the first three results of DesignMantic\u2019s website itself. A great result of course.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-22480 size-full lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/wpjournalist.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/afbeeldingen-comprimeren-TinyPNG-zoekresultaat-1.jpg\" alt=\"pictures-comprimeren-TinyPNG-search\" width=\"800\" height=\"329\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 800px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 800\/329;\">And well\u2026 I googled only a few articles, with fantastic results!<\/p>\n<p>And there are probably more articles from the knowledge base that score high in Google.<\/p>\n<p>WOW\u2026.<\/p>\n<p>Obviously, a lot more tools will score high in Google. Which is something I will of course be figuring out in <a href=\"https:\/\/wpjournalist.nl\/en\/this-is-how-you-use-google-analytics\/\">Google Analytics<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Conclusion<\/h2>\n<p>As a team, you are stronger than just you alone. The same goes for a knowledge base. The strength is in the togetherness.<\/p>\n<p>If you connect all of the separate articles, you have a chance to score better in search engines.<\/p>\n<p>It really takes some time to set up a knowledge base. It seems boring and time consuming, but at a certain point you will also begin to enjoy working on your knowledge base.<\/p>\n<p>You learn a lot about a topic when you write about it a lot.<\/p>\n<p>People will start seeing you as an authority if you know a lot about a certain subject. And they will also start approaching you for it.<\/p>\n<p>I am very content with my knowledge base.<\/p>\n<p>Have you yourself made a knowledge base?
